Anyone knows exactly how this cyclists retired so earlier in their careers or started declining so early?

"I don't know if your statement applies for the complete list. Don't forget some of the started their pro-career at the age of 19-20 en that hey had a pro-career lasting more than 10 years, which is quite a lot".

      - Giuseppe Saronni (19 y, 1977-1990)
      - Greg LeMond (19, 1981-1992) volgens eigen zeggen gestopt vanwege dopinggebruik concurrentie. (according to his own words, stopped because of doping(mis)abuse of his competitors).

      - Cochise Rodriguez
      - Miguel Morras
      - Tommy Prim

      - Fons de Wolf (22, 1979-1990)
      - Alexi Grewal
      - Serguei Sokouroutchenkov, gestopt op 33/34 jarige leeftijd, is dat vroeg (stopped at age of 33/34, is that early))
      - Charly Gaul (20, 1953-1965)
      - Marco Groppo

"You did forget to mention Edwig Van Hooydonck and Frans Maassen (both 30) and Bernard Hinaullt.
According to me Edwig and Frans stopped when they realized their competitors used illegal stuff (now we know it was EPO).
Bernard Hinault stopped at the age of 32 exactly at the age he always wanted to retire.

Don't also forget the salaries were quite a lot lower in those days. When the results began to decline it was less interesting to proceed".

Yes, I think you are right. But I'm not talking about early retirements but also early decline.

          Hallo

"Freddy Maertens retired in 1987 and not in 1985".

As far as Soeko is concerned , don`t forget that he was past his best in 1984 , after having been part of the SU team for nearly 10 years. The real top riders in the Soviet system never enjoyed long careers , 4-6 years , quite something in such a murderous and bestial sporting system.

Eddy Borysewicz said " The national coaches of Eastern European countries are killers " , he was thinking primarily of the Soviets under Kapitanov.

The three riders you mention did not have long careers as SU riders , Ugrumov had the longest SU career , but he was never at Soeko`s level , Tchmil and Ivanov had almost no SU careers remotely at the level of Soeko.
Soeko was probably the best amateur of all time , look what he won between 1978 and 1981 , only 4 years.

                1978 L`Avenir
                1979 L`Avenir , Peace Race , Regioni Toer
                1980 Olympic Champion , 2nd GC L`Avenir
1981 Regioni Toer , 2nd GC Peace Race , 2nd GC L`Avenir , and 4th GC in Toer de Luxembourg where the Soviet team utterly " destroyed " the pro`s.

No amateur in the modern period has ever won as much as Soeko in only 4 years. Soeko`s career was really over at the end of 1981 , at 25 years old.
He had only one other great win , the 1984 Peace Race by only a few seconds from Nentcho Staijkov.
